Naturopathy (Nature-o-pathy) is a natural health care profession emphasizing prevention, support, and optimal health through the use of all natural, non-invasive therapies, and natural substances that encourage an individual's inherent self-healing process. Naturopathy recognizes the body's self-healing abilities. The human body has the inherent ability to recover from the constant assaults by the environment, lifestyle, and improper or bad dietary habits. Naturopathy encourages healthy choices and elimination of underlying causes of illness while taking into account and individual's physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social, spiritual, and other factors. Clients are are encouraged to take charge of their own well being. Traditional Naturopathy never includes minor surgery or prescription drugs and Traditional Naturopaths do not diagnose.

The term "Doctor" originates from Latin meaning "Teacher." Naturopathic Doctors are Teachers and those skilled or specializing in Health Arts.

Those who practice Naturopathy are called Naturopaths and are trained in all forms of natural therapeutics through a four year doctoral-level education which is followed by a national examination to ensure clinical competency. While Naturopathy is commonly classified as "Complementary and Alternative Healthcare," it is the original system of Natural Healthcare. It has been practiced in North America since before the founding of the United States. The 1929 Act of Congress, later amended in 1931 to fully recognize Naturopathy as separate from Allopathic Medicine and Surgery and as a standalone system of Healthcare. The practice of Naturopathy is protected under the 9th amendment of the United States Constitution.

Most U.S. States, including Michigan, do not require licensing in order to practice Naturopathy.

Licensing vs. Certification

  • First Do No Harm: Traditional Naturopaths follow three guidelines to avoid harm to their clients:

    • Utilize methods and therapies which minimize the risk of harmful side effects, using the least force necessary;

    • Avoid the harmful suppression of symptoms when possible; and

    • Acknowledge, respect, and work with individual's self-healing process.

  • The Healing Power of Nature: Traditional Naturopaths recognize the inherent self-healing process within people. Traditional Naturopaths act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to facilitate and augment this inherent self-healing process.

  • Identify and Work with the Cause: The Traditional Naturopath seeks to identify and address the underlying causes of illness rather than to merely suppress symptoms.

  • Work with the Whole Person: Traditional Naturopaths evaluate each client by taking into account the physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social, and other factors.

  • Doctor as Teacher: Traditional Naturopaths educate their clients and encourage self-responsibility for health. They also recognize and employ the therapeutic potential of an advisory relationship.

  • Prevention: Traditional Naturopaths emphasize the prevention of illness by assessing risk factors, heredity and susceptibility, and by making appropriate interventions with their clients to prevent illness.
